Why me? question which leads nowhere

Once, on this boulder in the middle of the widest river in our town, I sat lost in thoughts that seemed to have no way out. Half a day—or maybe the whole day—I spent crying and asking myself: “Why me? Why is this happening to me? Why does everything bad seem to happen to me? Why do others have it easier, better, lighter?” That boulder became the witness to my darkest hour, my despair, and my sense of injustice.

I was exhausted. Overloaded with work, responsibilities, constantly saving everyone else but myself. I was trying to fix others while letting life break me into pieces. I didn’t know how to set boundaries, and I couldn’t say “no.” Sitting on that rock, I couldn’t see a way forward—only grayness, darkness, and pain.

But then something happened that forever changed the way I see life. I met people. Ordinary, simple people who—without knowing my story—extended a hand to me in the smallest, gentlest way. An elderly Swiss woman said, “Alles wird gut, everything will be fine.” I didn’t believe her then because I didn’t know how to believe. And later, the older man who approached me with a tiny bouquet of wildflowers gave me something more than flowers. He gave me a reminder that goodness exists. That the world isn’t only bad.

I cried even more, realizing that it wasn’t the world that hurt me. It was me allowing others to cross my boundaries. It was me taking on more than I could bear. Sitting on that rock, I began to see that the river I had been watching carried more than pain and exhaustion. It carried movement. It flowed. Just like emotions, events, and suffering—they are all temporary.

One day, I stood up from that rock. It wasn’t sudden, nor was it easy. But when I rose, I realized that the question “Why me?” leads nowhere. True strength began when I asked myself a different question: “What’s now? What’s next?”

That was the beginning. The beginning of a life where I started to believe in my strength. A life where I learned to say “enough.” A life where I stopped fighting the world and began taking care of myself.

The river flows, and life moves on. Sometimes it carries storms, sometimes peace, but it always moves forward. The boulder you’re sitting on isn’t the end. It’s just a stop along the way. When you decide to stand up, you’ll realize that your strength was always there—it was just waiting for you to let it take over.

What now? What’s next? Only you can answer that question. And that is your greatest power.
